How old are second hand shipping containers?

Last Updated on February 13, 2025

Second-hand shipping containers can be 12-15 years old and sometimes older. These are perfect to use as a secure site store.

Remember that shipping containers are used for shipping and are built of Cor-ten steel (high tensile steel). They will have been moved around by road and sea transporters, loaders, docks and container depots. The containers will deteriorate over their lifetime. Dents, scratches and holes will occur. Our container depots can repair almost any container; however, there are exceptions to the rule.

All our Second hand shipping containers are repaired to a watertight and structurally sound criteria. The paintwork will have surface rust going through it and they won’t look too pretty. They will be solid and should last around another 10-15 years.

During the time you use your container you will need to maintain it. The roofs, door hinges and door seals are generally the parts that need more attention. If the second hand shipping container starts to leak, then you can fill these with various products to ensure it is watertight again.

Standard second hand shipping container sizes are 20ft and 40ft long x 8ft wide. See here for dimensions.

Always make sure your second hand shipping container is sitting level.
