Understanding your choices when buying a shipping container

When deciding which kind of standard shipping container will be best for you, it all comes down to what you will be using it for. Consider, for example, the following:

Second-hand shipping containers
Second-hand shipping containers are over 14 years old. They have reached the end of their life in shipping lines but are perfect for static storage. They are checked and repaired to ensure that they are watertight and structurally sound.

Second-hand containers come with their original paintwork and may also have some surface rust. Despite this superficial alteration, used shipping containers should generally be expected to last another 10 years when used as a site store.

New shipping containers
New shipping containers for sale are generally manufactured in China, and to keep the price affordable, our shippers use them for transporting cargo into the UK. So we offer new ‘once used’ containers for sale. This type of container may have an odd dent or scratch at the time of delivery, but it will look tidier than a second-hand container. Again, these containers will be watertight.

Maintainance of your container
Remember, too, that some maintenance may be required over this time. We cannot guarantee the lifespan of any shipping container for sale is also key. However, we guarantee that our containers are watertight and structurally sound on the day of delivery.

Shipping Container FAQs
Can I buy a shipping container for storage?

Yes, we offer second-hand and new containers, which are perfect for storage. All our containers are watertight and structurally sound. Second-hand containers will not look too pretty, as they will have been used for shipping for around 15 years. New (one trip) containers have been used once to transport cargo from China. They will have a minor scratch or dent, but generally look new.

How much is a shipping container?

Shipping container prices are influenced by many factors outside our control, such as USD rate, material costs, labour rates, international conflicts, and trade tariffs. We endeavour to give all our customers the best prices. Please contact us to get an up-to-date quote using the quote request form on this page.

What sort of condition will the shipping containers be in?

Second-hand shipping containers are approximately 10-15 years old and are watertight and structurally sound. They will have surface rust and dents, but are mainly solid structures. New containers have been used once, for shipping in from China, and they will have minor dents and/or scratches, but are very tidy. Here are buying tips for a second-hand container and How to buy a New ‘once used’ container.

What types of shipping containers do you sell?

Standard 20ft & 40ft containers with double doors on one end, Tunnel units with double doors on both ends, Opensiders with double doors on one end and one side, and 40ft Hi-cube containers (9ft 6in high) with double doors on one end.

Are your shipping containers suitable for storage use?

Absolutely yes, they are watertight and structurally sound. Second-hand ones will last around 15 years of site storage, and new units should last around 40 years of site storage. To ensure longevity, we recommend you carry out some maintenance work on the containers throughout their lifetime.

Do you deliver shipping containers across the UK?

Yes, we use HIAB vehicles to transport and offload to your site. Our vehicles are fitted with a crane so that we can offload the container onto your site. The cranes mostly lift to the side of the vehicle and will need outriggers for stability during the offload.

Can I view a container before buying?

No, since Covid, our depots have had to stop allowing the public into their yards. They are simply not insured for the public to be present.

What is the difference between new and used shipping containers?

Second-hand shipping containers are approximately 15 years old and are watertight and structurally sound. They will have surface rust and dents, but are mainly solid structures. New containers have been used once, for shipping in from China, and they will have minor dents and/or scratches, but are very tidy. Here are buying tips for a second-hand container, and how to buy a new container.

Do I need planning permission for a shipping container?

That depends on the local council. A container is a temporary structure and can be moved if required, but some councils are not satisfied with this and can ask you to complete a planning permission request form.

Can I customise a shipping container?

Yes, we can convert a container and put livery on to advertise whatever you like. We would need your full specification in order to price up the job accordingly.

If you want to buy used or new cargo shipping containers for conversion projects, please contact our sales team. We also provide a container conversion service with competitive pricing.

We are also able to supply cargo shipping containers with several different door types.
